Center for Computer Studies, Dibrugarh University

Dibrugarh University initiated its journey of imparting computer education by establishing a Computer Centre in 1976. Computer Centre, D.U. created Computer awareness and trained teachers, research workers, employees in Computer Programming and Applications at that time. It also trained employees of various banks and helped in Computerization. It started Computer education by introducing a “Six-month Certificate Course on Computer Programming”. In 2004, it was upgraded to the Centre for Computer Studies and started “Post-Graduate Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA)”. BCA was introduced in July, 2004 and MCA and B.Sc IT were introduced in January and July, 2007, respectively.

Mission

Computer laboratories

At present CCS has three well-equipped computer laboratories with the latest Dual-Core/Core2Duo configured 120 computers and another laboratory for Electronics. The Laboratories are configured with three Windows and one Linux server and also have a one high-end IBM server. All computers are equipped with all of the necessary software. CCS also has four Sun Microsystems’ SPARC machines with Sun Solaris OS. All of the laboratories are connected with LAN and Internet and are fully air-conditioned.

Internet facility

The Centre is connected to the Internet through the University Campus network which is equipped with a dedicated 256 Kbps VSAT link and also a 2Mbps broadband Internet connection. The Centre’s laboratory Internet facilities are open to the students to use and learn the different subjects taught in the classes.

Library facilities

In addition to the University Central Library ‘Lakshminath Bezbaroa Granthagar’, CCS has a library of its own.

Activities by CCS

The faculty members of the CCS, D.U. are pursuing higher studies for their M. Phil and Ph.D. degrees.They upgrade their career by attending National and International conferences. The faculty members also developed software for Directorate of Distance Education, Dibrugarh University, Computerization of election of Dibrugarh University Post-Graduate Students’ Union (DUPGSU), Computerization of Library of Colleges, Computerization of Examination Branch of Dibrugarh University and Counseling and Admission procedure of Students of Dibrugarh University. The CCS organizes Computer Awareness Programmes for school students of neighboring areas of the University. The Centre has also conducted a number of training Programmes for Bank employees.

Certification

The Centre for Computer Studies is affiliated to All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The Centre for Computer Studies is also affiliated to Computer Society of India (CSI). The Computer Society of India is the first and the largest body of Computer Professionals in India. It was started on 6 March 1965 by a handful of computer professionals and has now grown to be the national body representing Computer Professionals. Its membership stands at more than 50,000 in more than 60 chapters throughout India.

The Center for Computer Studies (CCS) is an accredited study Centre of IGNOU. Also, CCS is accredited for the DOEACC ’O’ level course.

Selection procedure

The session for the MCA, BCA, BSc (IT), PGDCA, DCA Programmes starts in July–August every year. For enrolling to MCA, BCA and BSc (IT), notification is published in all leading dailies in the month of April–May. Students are required to appear in a state level Common Admission Test (CAT). On the basis of marks obtained in the test, they are called for a personal interview, counseling and admission.

In addition, the students must have the following qualifications:

MCA : Graduate in any discipline with 50% marks in aggregate and must have Mathematics as one of the subjects at 10+2 level or BCA.

For BCA : Passed 10+2 level with Mathematics with 45% marks in aggregate.

For BSc (IT) : Passed 10+2 in Science with 45% marks in aggregate and in Mathematics and Physics individually.
